How to verify a New Jersey roofer

Four checks you can run yourself in about five minutes, before you let anyone on your roof — and our own numbers so you can start by checking us.

The hardest quote to argue with is the cheap one from the crew with no paperwork. It is cheaper for a reason, and the reason is that the things being skipped are the things you cannot see — insurance, registration, permits, and whoever is going to answer the phone in three years when something leaks.

You do not have to take anyone's word for any of it. Here are four checks you can run yourself, on any contractor, in about five minutes.

  1. 01

Ask for the NJ HIC number, then look it up

New Jersey home improvement contractors are registered with the Division of Consumer Affairs and carry a 13VH number. Ask for it in writing, then check it yourself against the state's register. A contractor who cannot produce one on request has answered your question.

  2. 02

Ask what the general liability limit actually is

"Fully insured" is a phrase, not a number. Ask for the figure and ask for the certificate. If a crew damages your home or someone is hurt on your property, that limit is the difference between an inconvenience and a problem you inherit.

  3. 03

Check the manufacturer certification at the source

If a roofer claims a manufacturer certification, that manufacturer will list them. Look the contractor up on the manufacturer's own site rather than trusting the logo on the truck — the logo is the easiest part to acquire.

  4. 04

Read the reviews that mention a person by name

Generic five-star reviews tell you very little. Reviews that name the estimator or the crew lead, and describe what actually happened when something went sideways, tell you how the company behaves on a bad day.

Are you licensed and insured in New Jersey?
Yes. NJ Home Improvement Contractor licence #13VH09733600, and $2 million in general liability coverage. Both are verifiable — the licence through the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs, the GAF certification through GAF directly.
